We created a questionnaire for people to answer to use in our audience research, this will give us a better idea of what we can do to make our trailer better. We will know what is most popular among the horror genre, what people find scary and also if they like horror or not. We asked each person 3 questions being:
-Do you like horror?
-What is your favourite horror sub genre?
-How long should a trailer be?
We asked 50 males and females as we realised that the more people we asked than the more reliable our results will be. We asked mainly people between the age of 13-18, but several people who are much older including parents also answered our questions. We used a website called straw poll to make the questions for people to answer. With the collected results I put them all into pie charts by using microsoft edexcel, I believe this gives a better visual representation and will give us a direction of where to take our trailer. Above is our first question in the questionnaire, 'What is your favourite horror sub genre?'. We chose to separate the results into males and females as this would let us compare and give us a better idea of what appeals to an audience. In the male chart slasher was the most popular choice where as paranormal was a more common choice for females, we also noticed that paranormal was very liked for males as well. This would suggest that paranormal would be a good choice to use for our trailer. This could be because paranormal are a lot more believable then other genres, also teenagers are very common in these types of movies which we noticed in our research, which means it is easier to relate to our main characters. Some people might say that paranormal is a lot more likely to happen in comparison with Zombies. Zombies also had a high choice rate in both of the charts. But we came to the conclusion that we could make a far better story line for paranormal. (HC)
Above is our second question in our questionnaire, 'How long should a trailer be?'. We again chose to split the the charts between male and female. We considered that the results would be more similar in comparison to the other questions due to this question not really asking for an opinion. We can easily see that the majority of both charts decided that trailers should be between 1-1.30 minutes. This is helpful considering our guideline was to make a trailer of a length around this time. We didn't think the length of the trailer would be the most important factor, but we didn't want people to get bored while watching, but on the other hand if it was to short we wouldn't have the chance to hold out the suspense.
Above is the third question in the questionnaire, 'Do you like horror?'. We split the two pie charts into male and female as we thought there was a possibility that there could be some variation. Both pie charts show that the majority of people do actually like horror, but its obvious to see that more females don't like horror then male. 74% of males like horror, this is nearly 3 in every 4 which is actually a little bit surprising, we didn't think that this many would actually like the genre. We also saw that the majority of females asked liked media which is also encouraging. The fact that we can see that a lot of people like and enjoy horror is encouraging, it shows that a lot of people would enjoy the genre of a movie we are making, this indicates that a lot more people would likely see it. To conclude we can take a lot from these results, it gives us a better direction to take while producing our trailer. It is useful to use to see how we can make the trailer appealing to a wide variety of people, as it is obvious that men and woman have different preferences. So by attempting to tailor it to both genders, would insure that a large range of people are likely going to enjoy our trailer.
Below is an example a question that we used, we used strawpoll as it was a free site with no sign up required. It also let us keep track of the results as people were taking the questionnaire. We did allow multiple poll choices, this is due to different people being able to use the same computer to answer the questions. (HC)

We also asked some of our students the questions and recorded their answers, this would mean that we could get some more in depth answers than just a multiple choice questionnaire. We also interviewed mostly students who didn't take media, due to them giving a real audience insite to what the viewers want to see in a teaser trailer. We would have liked to have asked more people, but this would have created a problem with the length as we already had a lot of clips. (HC)
